I follow the indications for Storage and preservation directives for a new engine on my two new rotax 912 s engines. The indications are:

- The engine must be stored in the original packing as supplied by BRP-Rotax.
- The protective covers must not be removed.
- The engine must be stored in a suitable place (closed area, clean and dry).

I also complied with the following indications because the engines have been stored for more than 12 months, have been packed for 4 years.

"If the engine is stored longer than 12 months, the following inspections must be carried out every 3 months:

- Remove one spark plug on each cylinder and turn crankshaft by hand 2 full turns. Refit spark plug.
- Visual inspection for corrosion (e.g. on propeller shaft). If corrosion is detected, the engine must be sent immediately to an authorized overhaul facility for inspection."

My question is whether I should take any additional action to return these engines to service??

Thank you very much for your help.

The "Turn The Crankshaft By Hand" Procedure will only buy you another 12 months.
After 24 months, all bets are off

     - - - - -

From the Line Maintenance Manual Section 05-10-00.

    Storage Period of the Engine
Observe the storage and preservation directives!
NOTE: The maximum possible storage period of the engine is limited to 24 months.
If this period is exceeded, the engine must be sent to a ROTAX authorized overhaul facility for inspection.

When you were approaching the 24-month point, I would have recommended getting it on a test stand and installing the Oil system.

Then you could turn the engine by hand a hundred turns and pump Oil to all the moving parts.

From the Maintenance Manual Heavy Section 5.1

    • "If the engine is stored longer than 12 months, the following inspections must be carried out every 3 months:
      - Remove one spark plug on each cylinder and turn crankshaft by hand 2 full turns. Refit spark plug.
      - Visual inspection for corrosion (e.g. on propeller shaft). If corrosion is detected, the engine must be sent immediately to an authorized overhaul facility for inspection."

I executed these actions after 12 months have passed every 3 months to the present and I have not found corrosion in the engine, but someone tells me that I must send my engines to a rotax service center anyway.

In this same chapter you can find the follow  note:

◆ NOTE: The maximum possible storage period of the engine is limited to 24 months. If this storage period is exceeded, inspect following steel components for corrosion:
    - camshaft, crankshaft, gear set and propeller shaft If corrosion is detected, the engine must be sent immediately to an authorized overhaul facility for inspection.

We have performed the corrosion inspection and it was not found. Is it correct that I continue executing the previous actions every three months or should I do something additional?

After 12 months you will be inspecting and Hand-Cranking every 3 months.

After you perform this exercise 4 times, your 24 months are up.

You can not extend the storage of the engine forever.

After 24 months, It is"Use it or Lose it!"

At a minimum, after the 24-month point, if you are not going to get it running, I would recommend getting it on a test stand and installing the Oil system.  Then every few weeks you could at least hand prop the engine until you saw Oil pressure plus another 100 turns to push at least another half of a liter of oil through the engine to refresh the oil coating the internal components.  You will need to be sure to "Burp" The Oil Tank to return the Crankcase Oil to the Oil Tank.

The only thing worse than Running the engine is NOT Running the engine.

The engine has been in storage for over 4 years.

As I have told others before... You have three options.

    1. Scrap the engine and replace it with a new one.

    2. Have the engine Inspected and serviced as needed.

    3. Use the engine as it is and hope for the best.

Option #1 is out of the question. We know!

You know that Option #2 is the correct answer.

You also know that Option #3 is what you are going to do no matter what is recommended, but you want someone to tell you that it is OK. smile

It might run just fine or it might not.

    Only time will tell.
