I’m in the middle of a 100 hr inspection and trying to understand item 18 in checklist (smooth performance of the engine).  It says to inspect of turning of the crankshaft.  I’m not exactly sure what I need to inspect here.  The chapter reference is 05-50-00 sec. 3.13, which does not mention crankshaft inspection.

Also, where do I locate the crankcase S/N?

Thanks,

MJ (N418MJ)

What Model engine are we talking about?

Are you sure you don't mean section 3.12 ???

The Serial Number should be stamped into the Lower Left Side of the crankcase; under the #2 and #4 cylinders, between the lifter bores.

    Engine: 912ULS

the reference calls out section 3.13

section 3.12 is the friction check, which I think I’ve got figured out.

18.) Smooth performance of the engine
Inspection of turning of the crankshaft.
For all engines with crankcase up to S/N 27811 inclu-
    sive. torque __________Nm
NOTE: At engines with new crankecase
S/N 06.0010 or higher only in-
spect in case of suspected hard
    movement.
    X 05-50-00
    sec. 3.13)

    Thanks,

Hopefully others will clarify and expand on this, but to get you started their was a problem with engine cases for certain serial numbers. The problem caused wear of the mating surfaces, and that in turn caused friction on the crankshaft. That's the extent of my knowledge on the subject, but it was a serious issue so be sure to follow through.

Checklist Item #18 is titled "Smooth performance of the engine"

Chapter 05-50-00 Sec. 3.12) is titled "Smooth performance of the engine"

The Sec 3.13 reference is an obvious Typo.

Checklist item #18 is required of the Older Crankcases, and Optional for the newer ones; "Only inspect in case of suspected hard movement."
