I'm surprised no one has mentioned that there is a great video on this site that shows how to do this...  I would watch those before doing it myself, or having my mechanic do it.  Reading is good, reading AND watching the video is better.  Doing both, then seeing a "pro" do it is better yet...

    Wallace,

if you could get your aircraft up here to the Huntsville Alabama area I could show you how to synch the carbs mechanically and pneumatically and set the idle, and possibly balance your prop too.

Thanks, Jim.....I got a hold of Smith in Lucedale, MS and he told me a way to set the idle and maybe bring it to him in a couple weeks. I will try that and I ordered a Carbmate to give me an estimate of how much they're out and try to adjust them myself. I've been watching videos and reading, I don't think it's that hard.

Use gauges and not a Carbmate. It’s easier to use and you can diagnose with gauges.

Just a FYI comment: I disagree that a pair of any cheap gauges are good enough. They need to be of good enough quality so that an equal vacuum applied to both gauges reads the same on both dials. Some cheap gauges won't do this. The whole sync process is to get both readings to be equal, therefore the gauges themselves MUST read the same at any vacuum.
