I have two broken exhaust springs and all I’ve done is ground run the engine for a few hours. I safety wired the springs which are carbon steel. I didn’t apply silicone. What am I doing wrong?

I run three beads of hi-temp silicone down the outside of each spring -- no spring breakage so far in 900+ hours.  The safety wire is really only there to keep broken spring pieces from going through the pusher prop or somebody's head.

The silicon on the springs helps keep the springs from vibrating themselves to death.

Did they break in the hook ends or mid-Coil?

Are they still looking shiney and new or badly corroded?

Broken at the ends, light surface rust. I think my home made installation tool may have nicked the spring end during installation because I can see a microscopic fatigue crack signature on the broken bit.

I bought some stainless springs from Rotax, so I’ll fit them with a new tool and apply silicon as well as safety wire.

The Vans MM also recommends pulling the springs with a safety wire loop so as not to scratch springs ends.

You can always pull the Springs with an actual SPRING PULLER.  Imagine that!

They actually make a tool for Pulling springs and it is under $10.  Under $5 if you look.

And easy enough to make with an old fashioned Coat-Hanger, Which might be even harder to find. wink
