I have 912is s/n 77703492 gear box s/n 67129..I am concerned about gear box wear..what if any problems have been noticed in the older units..what can be done to increase the reliabilty ..is it worth getting an upgrade that is supposed to be in s/n 74000 and up. I would like any input on this issue that could be offered.

If it isn't broke don't fix it...

Many seem to have had premature wear on the dogs of the first IS gearboxes. Personaly mine lasted 600 hr and was then "growling" we checked and the dogs were wearing and decided to "upgrade" to the newer one with the oil spray system. I do not know of anyone whom has high hours on the new design ? and can therefore confirm that the spray system has totaly fixed the problem. The IS manuals state that the gearbox should only need inspection every 1000 hr not 600. However again do not know until some peope put serios hours on them.

I cannot see any advantages of changing a working gearbox with the newer one .

I had severe vibration problems with the origional gear box (engine s/n 4417255). Sent back to West coast Rotex center 4 times, averagng 60 hours each repair. When the modified gear box came out I purchased one (engine out of warranty). Has about 30 hours on it  and the change has made the engine a pleasure to have now.

I had a couple chunks of gearbox metal stuck to the magnetic plug at 125 hours on my engine. After disassembly,  the gearbox was shown to be damaged and Rotax covered the new gearbox with the oiler upgrade. We flushed the engine oil system and installed the upgraded gearbox and so far so good, but there is only 80 hours on the new gearbox.  I did an oil change 50 hours after changing the gearbox and the mag plug was clean, oil filter clean, and the oil sample test good.  I have not heard of or read about any failures of the new style gearbox, but time will tell.
