I am considering to fit Vertical Power’s Primary Power System (PPS) and VP-X with my Rotax 912iS Sport engine. However, the ECU in the 912iS controls the sequence of events during start-up including the control of the starter solenoid. Does anyone have any experience making the PPS work with the 912iS engine? How can I attach the two voltage regulators? Can the starter solenoid be replaced by the PPS?

Hello Peter,  I am interested in doing the same, install the PPS with the 912is.  Several weeks ago, I spoke with Vertical Power and was told that the installation may void the Rotax warranty but I can't find any data to confirm.  Have you had any success in answering your question?  Any help would be much appreciated.  Thanks,  Eric

    Hallo Eric,
Here is my inquiry to Vertical Power:
I am installing the Rotax 912iS Sport engine in my Zenith 750 homebuilt. And my inquiry from the Rotax dealer was "keep the hands off the PPS".  The Rotax engine has two grounding circuits, one with the engine (I believe Line B) and one with the aircraft frame (Line A). The starter solenoid is mounted isolated from the aircraft ground. Did any of your engineers ever looked into the 912iS engine and how to wire the PPS / VPX Sport into the Rotax electrical system? If so do you have a schematic, I was looking into the Rotax Owner Forum and no mention of the PPS.

And here is Vertical Power's Answer:
Hallo Peter, Unfortunately we had similar responses from Rotax when we were designing the PPS because they have a proprietary starter solenoid that if not used, “will void the engine warranty”. I have no guidance for it’s use with a Rotax engine. My apologies, but without their cooperation, I cannot recommend you use one. I did find a discussion in this forum using Vertical Power's PPS with a Rotax 912 ULS engine, but not with the 912iS Engine. I wish a Rotax engineer would chime in and give a technical rhater than a legalistic explanation why or why not to use vertical power's PPS.

The ECU does not control the Starter, the signal just passes through.
As long as START or BACKUP Power is supplied, the starter will engage with BOTH Lanes OFF.
The same situation applies to the Fuel Pumps.

To cover all bases, you could attach the STARTER OUT from the PPS to energize a small (10A) relay that is wired to close HICB-4 to HICB-12 to engage the starter solenoid through the ECU..
It will be a Contactor, Energizing a Relay, Energizing a Solenoid.
Triple isolation and Way Overkill, but it will work just fine.

Peter and Bill,  Thank you both for your response.  I just now saw your responses.  Thanks!
