My crated 916 is coming up on its 12-months-since-delivery anniversary soon, and since it is still in the crate and in the factory blue bag, I believe I am supposed to execute some engine preservation steps since it won't be running at the 12-month-since-delivery date. I hope to have it running in a few more months (come spring) but as of right now I need to do the preservation steps, yet I can't seem to find them documented anywhere.

I searched all the Rotax documents to find the steps but can only find documented steps for engines that are already "in operation". (those steps usually start with "change the oil" and say "turn the engine over" which doesn't apply to me as my engine is crated and has plugs in all oil / fuel / coolant ports and has no propeller on it yet)

Now, I did find that the Installation Manual references the 12-month mark for a new non-operated engine and says to take the preservation steps found in the "Maintenance Manual". But when I searched both the "Line" and "Heavy" maintenance manuals I only find steps for already-in-operation engines (steps starting with "change the oil"). I searched the Operators Manual as well, but still only found steps for "in operation" engines.

I found two other posts in the forums requesting "preservation of new engine" information, but all the replies/answers were for "in operation" engines, not for what the OP had requested. I also searched the web in general but didn't come up with anything other than steps for "in operation" engines.

So, does anyone know where the steps are documented regarding how to Preserve a new 916 engine at the 12-months-since-deliver mark?

Thanks!

(You may wonder why I bought my engine so early, and the answer was to avoid tariffs on it, which I did. I also ordered my propeller early but it took so long to ship that I ended up with 10% tariffs on it, but at least it wasn't as expensive as the 916 so the tariff was a smaller amount)

    Hi Glenn

The guidance is in the installation manual.  It says as long as you are in the original package and unopened you are good for 12 months.  What it does no longer say is how to take this from 12 months to 24 months.  In past documents there was a procedure to take the engine sealing plugs off the exhaust and intake, then rotate the engine several turns, reseal the engine and then leave it for an additional 3 months.  This type of extension is only good to 24 months total from new.  After that they want to start to check for corrosion and lubricate critical items.  This is due to the drying of the original assembly oils and breakdown of the oil film internally that was done in the hot test at the end of assembly.

    Cheers

Thank you Rotax Wizard. That certainly sounds simple enough to do to give me another three months which is probably all I need. Although I don't have a prop on the engine I guess I can rig something up to the prop hub holes and rotate the engine. Thanks again!
