I'm considering purchasing a Borescope for inspection of my Rotax 912 ULS. I just watched a instructional video from Savvy aviation and they had some recommendations. However, given the larger cylinder of conventional GA engines. I wondered if there was something that has been found to be successful with the Rotax engine?

I've tried a couple of borescopes over the years. A few thoughts:

-- The ones with the articulated camera heads (i.e., tip can be remotely bent @ 180 degrees) are far superior to scopes with straight-ahead and/or 90 degree cameras.  Those tiny little 90 degree mirror tip attachments are worthless for looking at valves and heavens forbid the mirror detaches and falls into the engine.

-- You really need a scope that works well in viewing valve conditions.

-- The ability to view the images real-time (and via storage) on an I-Pad or laptop computer is very useful as is a Bluetooth connection.

-- Most of the cheaper scopes are relatively fragile so be careful using them or lending them out.

The VIVIDIA ABLESCOPE VA-400 V5 USB BORESCOPE is what was used in the video by Savvy and meets all those requirements.

    I love tools.

Over a lifetime have amassed an eclectic collection, many of which rarely or never get used. Technology has rendered some obsolete or for some of the vehicle specific tools (obstruction spanners) I no longer having that vehicle/motorbike/tractor.

I can see the benefits in being able to see inside a cylinder/manifold, without dismantling BUT the cost of a semi professional borescope, makes we wonder why an individual would purchase one. Surely this is a group/club purchase?

Mike...I purchased one of these several years go.  Loved it until the head froze and the cable failed inside.  They did nothing for me so am looking as well, however it will be with a different company at least for me.  Nice guy at the airshow, they were the main company Oasis Scientific Inc. selling direct at Oshkosh.  They did not replace it but just claimed a new one would be better.

    Just my experience.

    Cheers
