I just discovered that my oil reserve tank bracket mounted to the top of the 582 cylinder head has broke. I've been told this is a fairly common problem. My question is: Are there special precautions and procedures to removing the cylinder head bolts when R&Ring the replacement bracket? AND is there a better solution to mounting the oil tank as to not repeat breakage?

    Walt,

Not sure if you mean the rotary valve oil reservoir or the oil container for the fuel/oil mix. Since it mounts with the cylinder head bolts, I'm assuming its the oil for the fuel mix. If that is the case, the best remedy is to mount the container away from the engine altogether. For example, on the firewall. The only thing you have to be sure to do is to mount the tank so that it is above the engine in all attitudes of flight. I have a friend who has his tank mounted inside the cockpit.

As for the cylinder head bolts, it won't hurt to just take those two bolts out without disturbing the rest. just install them as you normally would. Be sure to clean the underside of the bolt head and the top of the cylinder head where the bolt tightens and apply a little lithium grease to the underside of the bolt head. also on both sides of the new tank mount if you use one. This will insure a watertight fit between the bolt and the cylinder head. Tighten to 18 ft/lbs. 16 ft/lbs. if it is an older engine with the studs and cylinder head nuts.

Bill, Thanks for the fast reply. Yes, I meant the main 2 stroke oil injection resevoir tank mounted on top of the cylinder head. I will consider moving in the future. In the mean time, the info you provided on how to deal with the cylinder head bolts was just what I was looking for. Thank you so much. Very helplful!

    Bill,

When removing the 3 cylinder head bolts holding the oil tank bracket, coolant was present in the bolt holes. When reinstalling the bolts, enough coolant was present to spill out over the top. Is this normal or do I have a gasket fail? From the Rotax Illustated Parts Catalog exploded view, it seems there is a gasket around the cylinder and a gasket around the head sealing the coolant from the cylinder and within the head allowing the bolt and bolt hole exposed to the coolant. Is this correct? I just want to be sure. Thanks in advance.

    Walt,

with all three bolts out it is possible to have some water seep into the bolt holes. The round cylinder gasket and head gasket are actually a rubber O rings which keeps the water out of the cylinder but not necessarily out of the bolt holes. There is no seal around the bolt holes themselves except for the metal to metal contact. Just to be safe, pull the spark plugs and see if any water got into the cylinder. I doubt you will find any. You can also check the radiator level just to be sure.

After you start the engine, run it a while and retorque the bolts. Wouldn't hurt to check them all.

Let us know what you find.

    Walt,

One quick thing I forgot to mention. If you do get a leak around the new bracket, You can use an rtv silicone under the bracket instead of grease.
