How do I reset Flydat memory

Ive got a 912 uls that had a egt sensor go bad (reading too high) After wiggling wire and determining the sensor was bad, I kept flying for a while. I replaced the sensor, but now the I can't delete the service memory in usual manner, it being full. Ive been told I have to send unit to service center for them to delete it. Is this true? It is six years old, and out of warranty.
