Hi. It is save to run 912UL in -10*C outside/oil?

In manual I can read that I can run engine up to -25*C (oil).
There is any techniques of pre-heating oil? My friend have heater installed on oil tank (230V heater) but I'm not sure if it is important.

I'm asking because manual allow to run engine in -10*C but my flydat show red-alarm until temperatures grow over 0*C.

    Hi,
I believe rotax recommends preheating the engine , especially the oil, at temps of + 10C and lower.

    I use this " below + 10 C " as a rough rule for preheating .

Take an oil can at -10 C and see how it pours , the oil comes out slow and dense. It would take quite a while for a cold engine running to warm it up and get it flowing decently, in the mean time some areas are not getting sufficient lubrication.

The companies Tanis and Reiff make preheat systems for the 912 . both have a heating pad that goes on the oil tank and heats the oil real nice . They need time to work , around 5 hrs if its - 20C and the cowl should be covered with an insulated cover or blanket to help keep the heat from escaping out of the cowl.

When you guys think about pre-heating it's not just the oil. You should consider the entire engine block including the oil that isn't in the oil tank, but is in the engine. The oil not in the oil tank will reach the engine first on first crank. The Tanis system is a gold standard in pre-heating and heats the entire engine block and it's oil. Engine pre-heating is important to those who fly in those extreme cold temps. You can pre-heat in other ways, but try and make sure it heats the entire engine. Some methods I have seen are just feel good attempts to heat an engine and it is very limited to a singe point or just the surface. The engine is a huge junk of metal and reaching to its internal parts may require more time, heat or a better delivery system than some use.

preheat your engine before starting in cold weather .
