I have a 912 ULS in service since 2010 with just 174 hrs running time.

During a recent oil change we found about 10 tiny silver coated metal fragments in the old engine oil.
The oil filter is clear, as is the magnetic plug. The engine is not burning oil and no symptoms of running problems, I.e. Noise, vibration etc.

Any advice as to best action at this stage ?

Regards

    Hi Daniel,

I don't think you'll need the sad face.
This would be better answer if we could see exactly what you have.

If they are just tiny slivers you may see this while the engine is breaking in and it may be more normal versus bad. Just keep an eye on it at the next oil change. At the next change you could collect and oil sample and send it in if you wanted. The mag plug could also have some fine tiny particles too. This is normal.

One way I check oil filter membranes during an inspection is to cut it out and then place it in a jar with about 1" of fuel, put the top on and shake it a little to wash the filter completely clean of all particles. The I remove the filter element and look at it which at this point is usually very clean. Then I pour the fuel out with any particles through a white paper towel. This allows the fuel to pass, but any and all particulate matter that was in the filter that the human eye might miss on an oily filter membrane is staring at you like a neon sign on the white paper towel.

My guess is you can keep a happy face. :cheer:

    Hi Roger,

During your filter inspection, following the removal of the of the inner element from the outer metal shell, are you cutting the element free of the top and bottom metal "lids" prior to placing it in the jar with fuel or placing the entire unit in the fuel?

    Thanks,

Cut out the paper element just like you would normally do. Discard the metal center and place the entire paper element in the jar.
