Part of the problem is there are numerous exhaust setups. I have tried a few different things, but I like to use 12" needle nose pliers with some notches cut into the jaws with my Dremel tool and a cut-off blade. Look at the links and the picture. I use them for many things. These don't slip and you can use your weight to take springs off or on and not just use wrist and hand strength.

    Roger,

It's interesting that you have a tool to grab and pull the springs. What I've done (which works quite well) is to use a regular pair of needle nose pliers, about 8" long. Rather than grab the end of the spring with the pliers, I close the jaws of the pliers and slide the closed jaws through the end of the spring and then pull the spring end into position on the loop, and release it there. Basically, my method "pushes" the spring end into position, while yours "pulls" it. My way avoids grabbing, and possibly bending or scoring the spring end and creating a stress point. The ends of my needle nose pliers (and all others that I'm familiar with, including the ones in your photos) are rounded on the outside, and the insides never touch the spring.

I just replaced all 8 of my springs with the new after market stainless steel ones available from CPS. I used zip ties to install them works like a charm and they can be used in any space and at any angle. Just make the zip tie loop hook it over the spring end and pull the spring into place when you are done cut the zip tie...8 springs 8 zip ties.

I use a piece of para cord , same idea, loop it around the spring hook. I wrap the string around a wrench for grip , easy and simple.

Go to any auto parts store and pick up
A brake spring tool. I got mine at Harbor
Freight. I have heard of folks using tie wraps to extend the spring but I don't see
How. I replaced all mine and secured with .40 safety wire and RTV. No problems what so ever except sore fingers and knuckles.
