Hi A guy i know was flying straight and level, fairly warm day

He said engine coughed then temps began to rise

They progressively got hotter, although oil did not go over 140

He has CHT guages on two cylinders... on got so hot the probe melted and fell out...

By the time he landed and turned it off the engine was running slightly rough... and all coolant gone

There is a whole in the coolant overflow bottle, but i suspect that may have been caused from the heat situation rather then causing the problem

Last leakdown test all cylenders where 76... after the high temps...three are 76 and on is 70
When hand turning the prop its seems to have less compression noticeable on one cylinder...

Oil filter was removed and inspected... there where a some but not many largish chunks of metal 1.5mm or so... possibly about 4 to 6 in total...but rest of filter looked fantastic and no more metal than normal

So question is how to proceed...

Would you restart the engine and test run on ground or proceed straight to tear down of offending cylinder ...

If he has it pinned down to just a single cylinder I would pull it and look. Starting it may cause more damage. If he is running rough, lost all coolant, melted a CHT probe and metal in the oil filter then it's time to investigate further.

    What year is this engine?
