Hi.........I have 2 aircraft with the 912S engine.

the newest engine (2015) was due for its first oil change and I thought I would fit the quick oil change drain which I have on the other aircraft.

it makes oil changes quick and clean and I have been using them for over 13 years on Rotax engines.

however, on the new engines the partition plate in the base of the oil tank is dished (domed) with the dome facing the bottom of the tank. This prevents the oil drain being raised and locked in the open position to allow the oil to drain free.

I'm pretty sure my other engine (2004) has a flat plate as the bottom partition and therefore does not impede the drain.

other than making an adapter which will give the clearance required, I wondered what others who have faced the same problem , have done.

thanks Kevin NZ

    Hi Kevin,

You are correct that the bottom oil tank plates are different and have been for a couple of years. The 90 degree quick drain does fit because it does not protrude as far up into the tank. The tip of the pick up tube is a bit different too.

That said I'm personally not a fan of the quick drain. For me they are too slow compared to taking out the drain plug, but my real reason is because it is so much slower you do not get a good tank flush compared to the quick and complete draining from removing the plug.

Saf-Air now has an adaptor for the new style oil tank: part number RM12175
the drain is part number M12175
