Has anyone used the challenger oil filter from aircraft spruce on their 914?

Do not use the Challenger or Tempest oil filter. It lacks certain features that a Rotax oil filters has. Not all filters are created equal.

First the drain back membrane was changed years ago because too many are too stiff and allow oil to bypass. The by-pass pressure is way too low. Most automotive filters are 13-15 psi. the Rotax is up around 18-22 psi. The Rotax filter has an internal check valve. No others do.

Will you engine run with another filter? Sure. But it's like smoking. It won't cause a disease today after one pack, but just give it a few years. Like no brushing you teeth. Sure you can eat have have good teeth for a short while, but given enough time the teeth rot.

Don't try to subvert the system here. In this case factory is better and designed with just your engine in mind.
Owners trying to cut to many corners and save $1-$2 here and there may spend hundreds or thousands later in repairs.
