Can I change the oil filter with oil in the tank? The tank is located above the engine, and I refilled the tank after an oil change before changing the filter.

Assuming you have a 912/914/915 engine...

    Yes, you can!
The Filter is after the Oil Pump which is a positive displacement pump.
If the pump isn't turning, the Oil will not move. It will block any potential flow.

Be sure to Purge the air from the system after any Oil Change.

    Hi Bill,

Purge or Vent after an oil change?

    What is "vent"?

OK, it is a bit of overkill.
Let's say at least hand crank it until you see oil pressure again and the new filter is filled with Oil.
It probably does not make a lot of difference but it certainly will not hurt.
It is a Belt and suspenders sort of thing. :)

    Hi Tom,

Venting and purging are two different things.
Venting is done at an oil change. The only oil loss here should only be the tank and filter. Once the oil is back in the tank and the new oil filter is on you rotate the prop 15-20 times and this helps fill the oil filter and remove some of the air.

An oil purge is done when you dump oil out of the oil lines, or oil cooler like you might do at a hose change. You do an oil purge on all new engines or overhauled engines.

You can find this info in SB's and the manuals.

    Hi Bill,
I just wanted new people to know the difference. No big shake.
