New problem. The weep hole on my 912 F series water pump has coolant coming out of it. My mechanic friend and I are replacing the vibration dampeners anyway, so the engine will be partially off the mounts I guess. Has anyone ever pulled a water pump and should I just order a whole pump or buy the special tools to replace the seals?

    Hi Jay,

The water pump seal replacement isn't for the faint of heart especially if you don't have the proper tools or you will ruin the new seal. If you have a Rotax shop around I would let them do this for you. If the drip is intermittent or was during a large OAT change and you got a tablespoon or two of coolant then I would watch it. It may not need a new seal. If on the other hand it is a fairly constant drip or leak then yes it may need to be changed.

Thank you Roger. The leak is consistant. I have between 5 and six drips of coolant under the plane daily. I always have had. So I constantly have the cowling off to check hoses and such. Finally asked an A&P to look at it and he found it right off. I'ts getting worse so I guess I'm buying tools. The nearest shop is in Seattle area. Lucky me.

I know, I know, never feel sorry for a guy with an airplane.

    Hi Jay,
One option would be to have your mechanic remove the waterpump and send it to me to replace the seal. I have done several in the last few months and have all the special tools. Roger is correct, without the right tools and knowledge it is very easy to ruin a new $80 seal.

That's a good Idea and I'll send it to you if I wreck the one I ordered, But I already ordered the tools from Lockwood (rental fee of about 50 bucks for all the tools.)and I think I can do it in the shop with my local mechanic. I am out in the sticks so there isn't any close help. Thanks for the offer, I didn't know you were even that close, 400 miles. You may see it yet.

Download Rotax SI-912-001 Installation of Rotary Water Pump Seal/Pump Impeller. Has step by step process for installing the new seal.
