    Hi Clyde

When you said it was 500 rpm down, I am presuming that it is 500 rpm down and that the tachometer reading low has been ruled out.
The fact that it was perfectly OK on one flight, and then suddenly looses 500rpm leads " me " to think that it is probably something simple like a blocked main jet, which could be caused by pieces of float material as the float coatings can start to disintegrate.
My suggestion was to strip, clean, and rebuild the carbs. Obviously then they would need to be balanced, which I suggested the way " I" would recommend. At no point did I suggest that the way you have balanced the carbs would cause this to happen.
Please tell me you have checked the tachometer.

    Cheers Mark.

I haven't checked the tach yet. Unfortunately this customer is a 6 hour drive one way and I don't want to drive all that way just for one check. I plan on getting the carb reuild kits and making another trip up there to do that and will at that time check the tach accuracy. I did disassemble the 1-3 side carb and it was clean, no jet obstructions I could see and the floats were not disintegrating. I may very well be the tach is reading low as it is an analog tach that is 10 years old, so we'll see.
I don't think 85/87 is low compression. 85 is only a 2% drop. I thought that was pretty good for a 10 year old engine. There were no leaks from the intake or exhaust side but quite a bit of gurgling from the oil tank.

    Hi Clyde,

87/85 psi for a compression test is very normal even for a 10 year old engine. The oil tank gurgle is also normal. When done right your shouldn't hear it out of the exhaust or intake. Most compression test I see done at 87 psi usually have results from 83-85 psi residue.

Hi Clyde. I live in Sao Paulo - Brasil and my engine is 11 years old (912 ULS). Excuse me for my english but i don´t understand one thing when you say " The owner tells me all the engine instrument readings are normal while he is flying except the RPM" . I imagine that when you have 500 rpm down you feel and hear that the engine is in fact 500 rpm down by other things other than the tachometer, that is why i don´t understand that yoy have a problem in the tach.
Please let me known, what happened.
