Hello.
I would like to have an opinion about my situation.

I have 912uls which have 850 hours from 2005 , noe last week i had to re new the airplane COA -but as the mechanic turn the prop over by hand(after flight of about one hour) it was very stiff and he just refuse to sign COA , though he saw signs of oil spillage and i adding about 100ml oil every 4 hours or so.
Now i would like to ask how can i have an official comment on this from rotax and what you guys thinking about this ?

has any one familiar with such a case ? can it be fixed by replacing some part ?

I appreciate your help a lot!

Best regards

Barak Ohana.

    Hi Barak,

First you need to determine if the engine is using oil or leaking oil. If it's leaking you should have oil on the engine and most times on the bottom of the plane. The air coming through the cowl for cooling usually deposits it on the plane's belly. If it's coming out the oil tank vent tube it possible you keep the tank too full.
If the engine is burning through the oil then the plugs may look black and wet with oil. Do a differential compression test. If the engine is burning oil then many times you can see it in the exhaust pipe. Run your finger up in the exhaust and see if it has dry grey or black soot or is it a little oily. Do you know if smoke comes out the exhaust at start or while it's running?

Do these things then let us know.

Thank you Roger for your reply.
can you think why after a flight when the engine still warm -hand turning the prop is too difficult?
that is the main reason according to our mechanic person that he refuse to renew my COA saying we need a new engine !..
now he open the cowl and saw some oil spillage on the engine sides i think.
he said it's called "geometric lock" , have heard on such thing ?

    Thnks again!

    regards,
    Barak.

I believe the answer is crankcase fretting. If you do have this problem then eventually yes you will need a new engine. The problem will slowly become worse. I bet when it cools it's normal to turn? Is it possible your crankcase has a crack somewhere?

Out of curiosity what is your wide open throttle rpm in flat level flight? If you are over propped and have a mid 2006 year engine or earlier like your 2005 model then if the engine is too over propped you may have a small crack up on top of the crankcase. Just too much stress. Crankcases were later changed. That said nobody should be running a badly over pitched prop. There are no redeeming qualities to this setup.

Roger, the full RPM is barely 5100 at Max throtle i got used to this so it didn't looks odd to me ...
and yes, when the engine get cooler hand prop get a lot easier .

    Thanks again for the reply!

Roger, now in your personal opinion is it justifying shutting down the airplane right now ?
is it become so unsafe to fly in this condition now that justifying shuting it down?

    Best regards,
    Barak.
