I have seen it many ways. Across the middle or a couple strips vertically.
I think most including myself just use a strip across the top and wrap just around the side edges to make sure it stays in place. I have seen people in really cold weather apply a couple of strips. With 2" wide aluminum tape start with 2" wide across. Then if that isn't enough just overlap the next by 1" at a time to make the temps what you want them to be. It's quite simple, easy and cheap.

    p.s.
They make a really heavy thick aluminum tape with no paper to peel off the back. Don't use that one. Use the thinner version that has paper backing to peel off. Nere use Duct tape or Gorilla tape as they will leave a glue residue because of the heat.

    Thanks guys,

I will look into the tape and let you know how I go.

You can see in this shot how cool the oil gets - this is on final at my local AD where the outside temp was about 24C

Don't worry about temps when setting up for landings. Your throttled back and not a lot you can do about it and it isn't that important for that short time. We just don't want all our cruise flights to be too low.
