I am not aware of any radiator cracking or fatigue issues on TECNAM aircraft in Australia going back to our first imports in 2000. Most Australian owners use the foil tape which is used to seal the gaps in foil insulation of houses. John Fleming can find it in his Canberra Bunnings Hardware store.

TECNAM have been fitting an oil thermostat as standard to Rotax powered LSA and have an optional coolant thermostat also available for cold climates.

    Thanks Bruce,

I know exactly the tape you speak of. I will get some handy for when the cooler months start to set in.

    Cheers

    UPDATE.

OK... took the bird up for a fly today. Ground temp was about 28C and the OAT in the cruise was about 20C. My oil temp would not get above 75 in the cruise. I would have thought that would have been warm enough. :(

We are in summer now, so not sure how I am going to manage this tape thing, but will do some experimenting and report back

    Cheers

OK, So today I went to my local Bunnings (Hardware) and the only tape I could find is this one...

    https://www.bunnings.com.au/ametalin-48mm-x-50m-insulation-and-ducting-tape_p0810227

So I bought a roll and have put a strip across the oil cooler. Have not flown yet, but will give it a go and let you know what happens.

IF this is not the correct tape, please let me know and I will remove before I fly.

    Attached is a pic.

    Hi John,

Looks like you're good to go. many put the tape on the oil cooler and the coolant radiator for cold months. many of the Flight Design CT pilots do this very thing and seems to work well. I have used it on my CT since 2007. Since we don't get real cold in Tucson, AZ and our oil cooler is mounted on the back of our coolant radiator one strip of tape across the top of ours that affects both of ours at the same time works quite well.
