Rotax has not provided testing data regarding the use of Decalin, however, we have seen VERY good results!. Based on our experience and what we have seen out in the field and at overhaul facilities, we stand by the below statement.

"it's still very good practice and we also recommend the 25 hr oil change and magnetic plug inspection when operating more than 30% `100LL Av-Gas"

And how often do you recommend cleaning the oil tank when using +30% leaded fuel?

As stated in the Line manual "If using leaded fuel it is required to clean the tank every 200 flight hours. It is only necessary to clean the oil tank and the inner parts if there is heavy oil contamination"

Doing 25hr oil changes with the use of 30% or more Av-Gas will help keep the oil tank clean, therefore the recommended 200 flight hours or when necessary is perfectly adequate! Inspecting the oil tank will determine if you need to clean it or not.

Regarding the use of Decalin, am I correct in assuming that if I mix 50/50 auto/100LL that the amount of Decalin that I use is based upon the quantity of 100LL, not the larger quantity of auto + 100LL ?

    Prompt reply from Decalin:

    Hi Kenneth,
Add Decalin in the amount specified for 50% 100LL.
However, if you suspect any carbon buildup in the combustion chambers you can dose at 100%, that's up to you.
Adding a higher dosage up to twice the recommended dose will not cause problems unless you have a heavy carbon deposit which may get released in chunks.  In that case, stick to the standard dosage and it will be removed gradually.
