Wise words John...and thanks. I gotta say though...nice bunch of blokes here at this forum. Be nice to actually all get together at a BBQ or such and have some real time chin wagging on all sorts of mechanics I reckon.

    Mike,

I've seen several inverted 582s and the owners have no problems with them. They run just as efficiently upside down. The drawbacks are minor and only occur during extended shutdowns. I'm told that that you have to be sure to get all the air out of the rotary valve shaft gallery any time you drain and refill it (which is not often) but that's not really difficult. The only other item i've heard is to check the plugs. When shut down, residual oil in the crankcase and on the cylinder walls can run down and foul the plugs. The carbs are still rightside up and the gearbox is designed to be used up or down. Other than just a little more attention to the plugs occasionally, I don't see any problems.

    Hi Bill.

Talking about oil....which do you recommend for the 582? The Rotax service page says this...

Rotax recommends using a "super" two-stroke oil which corresponds to ASTM/CEC standards and/or API-TC classification. It is also essential to choose an oil which is designed for an air cooled engine even if you own a liquid cooled engine.

My 582 is water cooled, and yet I need oil for air cooled? What oil you use Bill?

I am currently using Castrol Activ 2T (Jasco FC) for motor cycles.

    Mike,

Rotax recommends the air cooled engine oil for the 582 because even though its water cooled, its operating temperatures are up in the aircooled engine range. I use Pennzoil Outdoor oil, which meets the standards and is designed for aircooled 2 cycle engines. Pennzoil used to make another oil called Pennzoil Aircooled two cycle oil which just about everybody I know used until it was discontinued. Amsoil and AV oil are also used along with a lot of other brands. They're probably all pretty good. I think as long as you use any well known high temp., low ash oil that meets rotax ASTM/CEC orAPI-TC standards, you'll probably be OK. Oil is a touchy subject with most 2 cycle pilots. Whatever a particular pilot uses is, in his opinion, the greatest thing since sliced bread, and anything else is certain disaster. This is not true of course, and you could probably find several brands in your area that would suit Rotax specs.

Have since rang Rotax here in Australia and they say Castrol Active 2T is the way to go. I used to use Penzoil in the 503 way back in 2000. Still have 400mm in a bottle in the shed. Didn't know they sold out. Think its a red oil. Thanks for your help Bill
