I recently developed a "roughness" or vibration in my 2007 Sting with 1,040 hrs. I would describe it as being like: one mag had been shut off; or like there was fuel blockage someplace; or like I was flying grossly uncoordinated; or like I was flying with a nasty quartering-from-the-rear crosswind. It seems to be somewhat intermittent and concentrated in the mid-RPM range of about 3,800 to maybe 4,600, but sometimes higher or lower. It does not manifest in the low range of about 2,000-2,800. It was NOT present for the last 125 hours and appeared rather abruptly--and seems to be getting gradually worse.

We have pretty much ruled out the usual stuff: carb balance (checked several times); gearbox (Bellview springs 125 hrs ago & just now shimmed--with smallest shim); engine mounts; & propeller (checked for tracking and re-torqued. Also, in response to some visible "weeping" out the top of the 2/4 float bowl, we replaced that bowl, bowl retainer spring, needle seat, and gasket; the 1/3 carb was only checked for debris in the bowl and none was observed. None of these things have solved or helped cure the problem.

Where would you suggest focusing next?

    Hi Richard,

Since the last couple of items to be worked on can also cause this problem I would start there again even if you don't think it's the problem. Check the mag drop to help rule out electrical. The gearbox was just worked on so something may have gone wrong there. I might even pull the carbs and blow them out with carb cleaner and air. Debris could still be moving in the carbs. No matter what was worked on yesterday it could still be the problem. Depending on the type of prop it could have a weight inside like some composites or a blade could be bad or way out of pitch or balance. If the first two items above get fully ruled out then maybe a dynamic prop balance to rule that out.

Thanks. I had a bad feeling this might not be "easy"--or quick. Actually, today, I thought I had it, when I discovered that the new Woodcomp SR200 3-blade prop I had somebody put on 125 hours ago had the blades all miss-matched to the hub sockets; They are supposed to be matched A/A, B/B, C/C.

But, after correctly matching the blades to the hub sockets, the first two minutes it flew smooth as silk, and then began the intermittent vibration--bad feeling--stuff again.

Do you know if those wood-comp blades have weights in the end that could come loose, start moving in and out, and therefore intermittently throw the blade off balance?

I had a friend in Colorado with a Sting and they just threw a prop blade with a Woodcomp a few months ago. Check the prop with great care. They are switching to a Sensenich. It broke off in the hub. They never found it. The vibration before the engine could be shut down was so severe it bent the engine mounts and then some more minor damage after a successful landing in a field.

    Roger--

Thanks for your abundant help and advice on this and other forums. Yesterday, we were finally able to remove most of the offending vibrations--which most recently manifested as both a high- and low-pitch resonance--by replacing the six rubber "silent blocks" under the engine and welding one exhaust found to have a weld-crack. Next will be a dynamic prop balance; if that does not result in further improvement, a known-to-be-perfectly-balanced-and-smooth prop from another airplane will be put on and tested. The existing Woodcomp SR200 prop has only been on 125 hrs, and the plane was silky smooth until recently, however, one blade tracks 3/16-inch outside of the other two. Problem is, I don't know if it did so from the beginning--or not. Next time, I will track the blades when I install a new prop, so I know.

At any rate, I will update here, later, to maybe save some other folks some misery in resolving their vibration issues....RD

I just talked to my friend in Colorado yesterday and the new Sensenich 3 blade 68" prop seems to be nice and smooth. he did have some vibration on first run and found debris blocking the fuel return line and it was flooding the carbs causing a rough engine.
