Nick, is that the needle with the small red rubber tip on it?

    Mike,

Nick is right. Overflowing carb bowls are almost always the result of trash in the float needle. That is the one with the rubber tip. If you have done any work on the fuel lines or filter, that is where the overflowing problem came from. I would put the main jets that you took out back in. Smaller main jets will make the top end mixture leaner and the heat problem will get worse.

To be sure you get all the trash out, I would disconnect the fuel lines at the carb, remove the bowls, and spray some carb cleaner through the float jet to clean it out. You might also crank the engine a few seconds with the mags off and the fuel lines off the carbs. This will flush out anything out that is still in the fuel line.

Your problem reminded me of an old air force saying. "You can never have too much fuel on board-unless you are on fire."

Got her going ok again after removing the bowl and a clean and replace. Was excited to do another test feeling confident after my static test earlier provided good figures, however during the climb nothing had changed with low rpm still and high water temps. EGT fine.

This time I tried something different. I throttled from 6000rpm (which was all I could get) back to 5800 rpm and began a steady climb at 6oknts instead of 55 knts and 500 fpm instead of 800 fpm . Thje result was I could climb all day long without the temp sitting on 175F with OAT 50F. That was comforting to know, so it seems the over temps are only in the WOT position. I tried a larger main jet with no improvement. I checked the prop blades and they are all in order.

My next test will be with the new filters when they arrive, and after that will be the timing.

    Hi Micheal,

Your high temps may be just from overloading the prop/engine. Many other aircraft do not do full power and steep climbs because of this. Flattening the climb a little helps many keep away from the high temps especially during warmer weather. Try your normal flap takeoff setting and just climb more shallow and try a reduced flap setting for take off with a little less climb for a few test runs. My bet is the temps may stay down. Different things can affect this with different aircraft; things like angle of the radiator compared to the relative wind on a steep climb verses cruise, size of the radiator, air flow through the cowl in climb verses cruise or too course a prop setting, types of coolant used (50-50 verses Evans) or too course a prop pitch. Each one of these or a combo of these can cause a high temp issue.
